Hi everyone. I’m starting to get into using some of this new-fangled web stuff for my electricians business. I don’t want anything fancy, just a place to hang up my shingle on the web and let people know I exist. I think this site is great for chatting with other tradies about my business, but I want something that is a bit more ‘me’, and that I can use to mix my business and personal stuff online. Anyone got any ideas? Do I need to get a web outfit to design one of these for me?

Hi Stevo – have you looked at setting up some sort of blog? I set mine up at http://mrbutcher.spaces.live.com and I’m amazing at how many comments and conversations I’ve received via this site. It’s a great way to share your ideas and identity with the rest of the world without having to spend a bunch of money on setting up a dedicated site. Best of all, it was free, and it’s entirely customisable so you can set up your own look and feel.

We can help you set up a site, but I agree with MrButcher – unless you want to set up some sort of online shop, quite often you’re better off just creating a blog site (say on spaces) and for instance posting pictures of your work or customer testimonials to the site.

We set up a website, and we’re now selling our jewellery online as well as through our normal shops. It cost a bit, but for us it was worth it in terms of new sales. One piece of advice – you want to look at making sure your site is as discoverable as possible through the Live search engine. Having a profile on this site that is linked to your space can really help in that regard. Good luck!
