Processing Credit cards – ideas?

Hi all. I’m a self-employed electrician, and I’m going crazy trying to keep track of all the credit card payments I’m taking for jobs at the moment. Once I go onsite and do a job, I usually end up taking down my customer’s credit card number, and then when I get home that night use my bank’s web site to get the payment processed. I’m probably spending at least 2 hours every couple of nights doing this, and it’s driving me nuts. The other day, I took down the wrong credit card number so to add insult to injury had to go back and ask the customer again for the number. A couple of weeks ago I charged a job to the wrong credit card number, which caused a bit of a ruckus with the card’s owner. Does EVERYONE have the same issue with this? There must be a better way!!!??

Mate – one word. Cash Job. Offer your customers a discount for the foldy stuff, and refuse to let them pay by credit card. Works for me, although I haven’t been that busy lately... wonder why?

I carry around a machine to take imprints, and then give these to my husband to put through the books every night. He’s not that happy about it, though – says it interferes with his ironing in the evening. If anyone has a better idea I’d love to look at it – for the sake of hubby that is :)

Have you guys heard about Mint Wireless? They’ve got this amazing portable credit-card processing system that works off one of those PDA thingies. Basically, you swipe your customer’s card with the device, and it connects to the bank or whatever there and then and processes the payment immediately. No messing around, and you are guaranteed immediate payment. It handles cash payments, cheques and eftpos, so all forms of payment are fine. Even better, they provide this really cool web interface that lets you take the payments and reconcile into your accounting package (like MYOB or QB). Oh, and it doesn’t cost very much at all – definitely better than interfering with your SO’s ironing, Leaky! Check them out at www.mintwireless.com.au

Thanks guys for the responses – CleanrPooch – thanks especially to you. I contacted the Mint Wireless guys a couple of days ago, and am now signed up and using their system. I’ve got to say, it rocks and it really helps me get my payments done in record time. Thanks again, all!
